What Is Fastbreak Basketball?
The Fastbreak Basketball Club is a youth player development program serving the Herriman and South Jordan areas. It is specifically designed for athletes who plan to play for Herriman High School in the future. Our program runs throughout the school year—from mid-August through mid-May.
How Many Teams Will There Be?
We plan to form two teams per grade to compete in local and regional leagues and tournaments. Each team will be placed in a division that best matches their current skill level and developmental stage. Depending on tryout numbers and talent depth, additional teams may be formed in certain grades.
Program Purpose
Fastbreak was created to provide a superior pathway for long-term athletic development. Our core goals include:
Increasing Basketball IQ: Developing court awareness and decision-making skills.
Enhancing Individual Skills: Accelerating growth through additional weekly practices.

OTHER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BY YOUTH BASKETBALL PARENTS
Which AAU or club team is best for my son?
You don’t need to search for the "most famous" club or a shoe-circuit team. Instead, look for a program and a coach who value your son and prioritize his development as both a player and a young man. No one remembers a team's record in the 3rd or 5th grade.
When young players compete alongside peers from their own community, they build lasting chemistry and connection. Additionally, learning the language and terminology of their future high school program gives them a massive head start.
What do Fastbreak Basketball teams focus on?
We emphasize the fundamentals: spacing, off-ball movement, dribbling, defense, shooting, and passing. We intentionally avoid tactical "gimmicks" to secure youth-level wins.
For example, youth teams should master fundamental man-to-man defense rather than relying heavily on full-court presses or zone traps to beat an opposing 3rd-grade team. While presses and zones are important to learn eventually, they should not be the primary focus at a young age.
Is it truly important to play with local, neighborhood teams?
Yes. We strongly believe athletes should play alongside their friends and peers within their local community. It is equally important that they play for coaches they can look up to, learn from, and respect—coaches who are uplifting and encouraging, yet still hold players accountable and push them to improve.
How much traveling should we do at a young age?
An 8-, 9-, or 10-year-old does not need to travel out of state every weekend to develop their skills. Traveling for basketball generally becomes more relevant around the 7th or 8th grade. Even then, it should be limited to 2 or 3 times a year, depending on the level of the player and the specific opportunity.
What are the long-term goals for Fastbreak players?
While the goal for the majority of our players is to play high school basketball, we recognize that not everyone will make the roster. Ultimately, we want every participant to have an incredible experience competing, fighting for their goals, and maximizing their potential.
We emphasize the life lessons that sports teach: resilience, teamwork, and finding success in the daily journey of self-improvement.
Does my son have to play for Fastbreak to make the Herriman High School team?
No. Playing for Fastbreak is not a requirement to make the Herriman High School team. When high school tryouts arrive, the best players will be selected, regardless of their club background.
However, getting involved with the Herriman coaching staff early makes a significant difference. Your player will become deeply accustomed to our system, making their future transition to high school ball seamless. Furthermore, it gives our coaching staff years to observe, work with, and understand your son's unique capabilities. It is incredibly difficult to truly know a player's full potential from just a few days of high school tryouts and open gyms.
While Fastbreak is not mandatory, we firmly believe we offer the finest youth basketball development experience in the Herriman/South Jordan area.
